As a mom of three and the founder of Naetal Skincare who created the line out of my kids’ eczema struggles, I know how overwhelming it is to pick safe skincare products. Many brands claim to be “natural,” “organic,” or “safe for babies,” but the truth lies in the ingredients list— and not all of those ingredients are safe.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the top 12 Harmful Ingredients to Avoid in Baby Skincare and anyone with sensitive or eczema-prone skin — plus tips on reading labels and why Naetal focuses on pure, intentional skincare you can trust.

Ingredients to Avoid in Baby and Kids’ Skincare

1. Fragrance (Parfum/ Natural fragrance)

Fragrance might seem harmless — but on an ingredient label, the word fragrance” or “parfum” can legally hide over 2,000 undisclosed chemicals. That’s because it’s considered a “trade secret” in most regulatory systems, meaning companies don’t have to list exactly what’s in it. So why should you avoid fragrance in baby products? One of the biggest hidden concerns are Phthalates. These chemicals (like DEP, DBP, and DEHP) are often added to fragrances to make them last longer on the skin, but they’re also known endocrine disruptors — meaning they can interfere with hormone development, fertility, and even increase risks of asthma and allergies in children.

Even labels that say “natural fragrance” can contain irritating or synthetic compounds if the full breakdown isn’t disclosed, especially when it’s used in baby or sensitive-skin products. Instead, look for the full list of ingredients (ie. essential oils) that make up the scent.  For children with eczema, fragrance is one of the most common triggers for flare-ups and irritation. So skip fragrance/ parfum/ natural fragrance altogether and opt for unscented skincare.

2. Phenoxyethanol

Often found in “paraben-free” baby products, phenoxyethanol is a synthetic preservative used to prevent bacteria in water-based formulas like wipes, lotions, and sunscreen.

While it's considered safer than parabens, it can still irritate sensitive skin and has been flagged by European health agencies for potential neurotoxic effects in infants, especially under 3 years old.

3. Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, etc.)

Parabens are one of the most widely used preservatives in skincare and personal care products including baby lotions/ balms, shampoos, diaper creams, and sunscreens. Their main job is to prevent mold and bacteria, but the concern lies in how they interact with the body. Parabens are known to mimic estrogen, which means they can interfere with the endocrine system— the hormone network that regulates growth, development, and fertility. Studies have detected parabens in urine, breast tissue, and even newborns, raising concerns about long-term exposure. While still legally allowed in small amounts, many experts and parents choose to avoid them entirely— especially in products for babies and young children, whose systems are more vulnerable to hormone disruption.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

SLS is a foaming agent commonly used in shampoos, body washes, toothpaste, and bubble baths to create that satisfying lather — but it comes at a cost. SLS is a known skin irritant that can strip away the skin’s natural oils and weaken its protective barrier. This is especially concerning for babies and anyone with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, as it can lead to increased dryness, irritation, and flare-ups. While it’s effective for cleaning, it’s simply too harsh for delicate skin. Even small amounts can disrupt the skin’s pH and microbiome, making it more reactive to other ingredients.

5. Mineral Oil / Petrolatum

Mineral oil and petrolatum are common in baby lotions/ creams/ balms because they create a barrier on the skin— but they don’t actually nourish or support healing. These petroleum-derived ingredients can clog pores, trap heat, and may contain contaminants if not fully refined. For babies with eczema or sensitive skin, this can worsen irritation.

safe alternative to mineral oil and petrolatum? Oil-based, plant-powered formulas like our Naetal Baby Butter, made with calendula-infused jojoba oil to soothe, protect, and deeply nourish delicate skin — without any fillers or synthetics.

6. Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives

Some baby shampoos, wipes, and lotions contain preservatives that slowly release formaldehyde — a known carcinogen and skin allergen. These ingredients aren’t always obvious on labels and often appear under names like DMDM hydantoin, Quaternium-15, and Imidazolidinyl urea. Even in small amounts, formaldehyde can irritate sensitive or eczema-prone skin and may be harmful with long-term exposure. For babies and children, it’s best to avoid products with these hidden preservatives and opt for preservative-free, oil-based formulas instead.

Harmful Ingredients in Shampoo, Body Wash & Diaper Creams

7. Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Often marketed as a “gentler” alternative to sulfates, Cocamidopropyl Betaine is a synthetic surfactant derived from coconut oil and is commonly found in baby shampoos, body washes, and bubble baths. While it helps create a nice lather, it can still cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially in babies and children with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It’s also a known contact allergen, particularly when contaminated with byproducts like amidoamine or DMAPA during manufacturing. If your child experiences redness, itchiness, or rashes after using foaming products, this ingredient may be the culprit. For sensitive skin, it’s best to opt for cleansers without harsh surfactants altogether. Instead, try our Oat & Calendula Bath- simply made of two soothing ingredients to nourish your littles' skin.

8. Artificial Dyes

Artificial colors like FD&C Red No. 40 and Blue No. 1 are commonly added to baby shampoos, body washes, and bubble baths to make them look fun — but they offer zero skin benefit and may trigger allergic reactions. Some dyes have also been linked to behavioral sensitivities and skin irritation in children. Because babies have more permeable skin and underdeveloped detox systems, avoiding synthetic dyes is especially important. When choosing products for your little ones, stick with dye-free options or naturally tinted formulas made from herbal infusions like calendula or chamomile.

9. Lanolin

Lanolin is a waxy substance derived from sheep's wool, often found in diaper creams and nipple balms. While it offers moisturizing benefits, it’s also a common allergen, particularly for babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Unless highly purified, it may also carry pesticide residues, making it less ideal for delicate baby skin.

Likewise, in diaper creams, it’s best to avoid heavy occlusives like petrolatum and mineral oil, which can trap moisture and bacteria rather than allowing the skin to breathe.

A safer alternative to both? Naetal’s Baby Butter — a nourishing, plant-based formula made with calendula-infused jojoba oil, colloidal oatmeal, and gentle oils to soothe irritation and protect sensitive skin, without harsh preservatives or allergens. While all ingredients are 100% natural, we recommend wiping off any residual product before nursing to ensure your baby’s safety.

Sunscreens and Pregnancy/Postpartum Skincare to Avoid

10. Chemical Sunscreens: Oxybenzone and Octinoxate

Oxybenzone and octinoxate are two of the most common chemical sunscreen ingredients found in many baby and family sunscreens. While they help absorb UV rays, these chemicals have raised concerns due to their potential to disrupt hormones and cause skin irritation—especially in babies, pregnant women, and those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Studies have linked oxybenzone to endocrine disruption and allergic reactions, leading many health experts to recommend avoiding these ingredients in favor of mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. For safe sun protection that’s gentle on delicate skin, opt for reef-safe, mineral sunscreens free from oxybenzone and octinoxate. We love using ThinkBaby for the kids!

11. Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin)

While retinoids are powerful for adult skin concerns, they are not recommended for children or pregnant women. For kids, their delicate and developing skin is more sensitive and prone to irritation, so gentle, natural skincare without retinoids is best.

For pregnant or breastfeeding women, retinoids—especially prescription forms like tretinoin—are generally avoided due to potential risks of birth defects and lack of safety data. Many dermatologists advise steering clear of retinoids during pregnancy and instead choosing safer alternatives like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and mineral-based sunscreens.

Remember to always consult your healthcare provider before using any retinoid products if you’re pregnant or caring for children.

12. High-Percentage Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a well-known exfoliant used to treat acne and improve skin texture, but high-percentage salicylic acid products (above 2%) are not safe for babies, young children, or pregnant women. Babies have extremely delicate skin that can be easily irritated or harmed by strong exfoliants like salicylic acid. For kids, especially those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, it’s important to avoid harsh ingredients and instead use gentle, age-appropriate skincare. Pregnant women should also avoid high concentrations of salicylic acid due to potential risks to the developing fetus. Lower concentrations found in some cleansers may be safe, but always consult a healthcare provider before use. For both children and expecting mothers, opting for mild, dermatologist-approved alternatives ensures effective and safe skincare.

How to Read Labels and Choose Truly Safe Skincare

Labels can be tricky. Terms like “natural,” “organic,” or packaging with green leaves and earthy tones don’t always guarantee safe or gentle ingredients. Sometimes, marketing can make products seem safer or cleaner than they actually are.

Regardless of packaging or advertising claims, always read the ingredients list carefully. Watch out for ingredients that might irritate sensitive skin, and prioritize products with short, simple ingredient lists free from synthetic additives. If you come across unfamiliar chemical names or numbers, it’s best to do your research or avoid those products altogether.
