My journey into parenthood began with Cooper, born at just 25 weeks. Our 176-day NICU stay was filled with challenges, including complications like PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) and NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis). PDA caused irregular blood flow due to a blood vessel not closing properly, putting strain on his tiny heart and lungs. NEC, an intestinal condition, led to severe inflammation and feeding issues. These conditions are common in preemies but can also affect full-term babies, making the NICU journey even more unpredictable.

With my second baby, I thought we’d avoid the NICU, but breathing difficulties led to a week-long stay—proof that even full-term babies can face unexpected challenges. Our third also had a brief NICU stay, and each experience taught me to cherish every moment.
The NICU staff and fellow families became our lifeline during our stay, offering not only expert care for our baby but also emotional support for us. Their reassurance helped us through the uncertainties, while connecting with other parents made the experience feel less isolating. My advice to anyone in the NICU is to ask questions, lean on the staff for guidance, and build connections with other parents. You're not alone in this journey, and the support from those around you can make all the difference.
